Good morning, Sussex County. Heritage Weekend fills Saturday and Sunday with museum stops, a train-station demo and a free fall festival in Newton, and Mountain Creek's Fall Fest runs its third weekend in Vernon. Here is what is on.

Heritage Weekend, Saturday and Sunday

The Sussex County Arts & Heritage Council's 16th annual Heritage Weekend spreads across local museums, historic sites and historical societies. The Council says to check each site's website or Facebook page for current hours before you go. The events it lists:

  • Newton Fall Festival and Car Show, Sunday, 11 AM to 4 PM. Free. The car show is in Municipal Lot #4 and the festival is on Spring Street.
  • Pop-Up Art Show and Sale, Sunday, 11 AM to 4 PM at the Newton Municipal Building. One day only.
  • "Revolutionary Lives" traveling exhibit at the Arts & Heritage Council, 133 Spring Street, Newton, Sunday, 11 AM to 4 PM.
  • History Talk: Women and the American Revolution, Sunday, 1 to 2 PM at 133 Spring Street. RSVP is required through the Heritage Weekend page.
  • "Posters for the People: Art of the WPA" at Peters Valley School of Craft, 19 Kuhn Road, Layton, Saturday and Sunday, 11 AM to 6 PM.
  • Live demo with a local train enthusiast at the Sparta Train Station, 30 Station Road, Saturday and Sunday, 10 AM to 5 PM.

A few changes to know about: the Council's Newton gallery is closed Saturday, and the exhibit there opens Sunday instead. Walpack's Van Campen Day is canceled, with Walpack Village activities listed for Sunday from noon to 4 PM. The Ludlum-Mabee House is closed this weekend because of road work on Route 15.

Fall Fest, minerals and pumpkins

Mountain Creek's Fall Fest returns Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM, with a bonus day Monday, Oct. 12, the same hours. Sky Rides are $14.99, the Adventure Package (a Sky Ride plus a Mountain Coaster ride in a reserved time slot) is $29.99, and bounce houses are $9.99, all plus fees and all bought online. There is a pumpkin patch, a hay maze and lawn games, guided hikes at noon, 2 and 4 PM with a Sky Ride ticket, and live entertainment from 2 to 5 PM. Two more weekends follow, Oct. 17-18 and Oct. 24-25, at 11 AM to 5 PM.

In Ogdensburg, the Fall Mineral Festival is Saturday from 9 AM to 5 PM at Sterling Hill Mining Museum, 30 Plant Street. The museum's page does not list admission; call 973-209-7212 to ask.

The Great Pumpkin Festival at Heaven Hill Farm, 451 Route 94 in Vernon, continues through Nov. 8. The farm lists general hours of 9 AM to 6 PM seven days a week; confirm before you drive out.

The Sussex County Fairgrounds calendar lists an NWNJ Collectibles Show Saturday at 10 AM; check the Fairgrounds calendar for details. More listings are on our events calendar.

Heard around the county

These are unconfirmed, so treat them as leads rather than facts. A community event listing says the Franklin Mineral Museum is reopening this week; the museum's website is the place to confirm hours. Another listing has the 20th annual Stillwater Fall Festival at Stillwater Township School on Saturday at 11 AM, which we could not match to the township's own calendar.

A first look at town hall

The Hopatcong Land Use Board met Tuesday. Its posted agenda included a new application from North East Health & Fitness LLC for conditional use approval of an indoor gym at 48 Lakeside Blvd. Minutes are pending, so we cannot yet say what the board decided. Our Monday brief has more on that meeting and what is ahead this week.
